If someone hurt you and you feel pressured to “just forgive,” this workbook gives you room to move at a safer, more honest pace.
Releasing What Hurt You is a therapist-written, 71-page guide to anger, grief, resentment, boundaries, trust, and the many valid paths forward—including release without contact or reconciliation.

Forgiveness is deeply personal. It may be meaningful for some people, unwanted for others, or something that changes over time. This workbook does not tell you what you must feel or push you toward a relationship that is not safe, healthy, or supported by reality.

Created by Caroline Aaron, MSW, LICSW, this trauma-aware guide combines compassionate psychoeducation with fictional examples, boundary scripts, decision paths, regulation tools, and focused reflection. It supports you in understanding what the hurt is carrying, protecting yourself in the present, and choosing a direction that belongs to you.

Inside the Workbook:
- A clear explanation of forgiveness—and what it is not
- Permission to decide whether forgiveness is part of your healing
- Anger as information rather than a character flaw
- Resentment, betrayal, grief, mixed feelings, and unfinished endings
- Body reactions and triggers after relational hurt
- A factual-story exercise, impact inventory, and loss-mapping pages
- Unmet needs, misplaced blame, protective patterns, and the cost of carrying hurt
- Readiness as a spectrum rather than a pass-or-fail test
- Decision paths that allow you to pause, stop, or choose another goal
- Four separate lanes: forgiveness, trust, access, and reconciliation
- No-contact, low-contact, and structured-contact options
- Practical boundary planning and scripts for pushback
- Apology versus repair and how trust is rebuilt through evidence over time
- A reality-based reconciliation assessment
- A 60-second hard-day SHORE practice, anger first aid, grounding, and urge support
- Tools for repetitive rumination and moments when the past feels present
- An unsent-letter exercise and a private release ritual with no forced forgiveness
- Five valid paths forward, including partial or revisited forgiveness
- Guidance for ongoing family systems, shared spaces, and recurring reminders
- Fictional examples showing distance, private forgiveness, and cautious repair
- A personal boundary, safety, coping, and next-step plan

This workbook is designed to help you keep your dignity and your choices while you work through what happened. The goal is not to make the harm acceptable. The goal is to help the injury take up less control over the life you are living now—at a pace that respects your safety and readiness.

This Workbook May Be a Good Fit If You

- Feel caught between resentment and pressure to forgive
- Are waiting for an apology, explanation, or repair that may never come
- Want peace without pretending the harm was acceptable
- Need help separating forgiveness from trust, access, or reconciliation
- Want clearer boundaries with a family member, former partner, friend, or other person
- Experience anger, grief, triggers, or repetitive thoughts connected to relational hurt
- Are unsure whether contact, distance, or cautious repair fits your situation
- Prefer a compassionate, non-shaming resource that leaves the decision with you

You can use it independently for personal reflection or alongside support from a licensed mental health professional. Move slowly, skip anything that does not feel appropriate, and prioritize stabilization and safety over completing pages.

Important Ethical Distinctions:
Forgiveness is optional. It is not the same as forgetting, condoning, excusing, minimizing, trusting, restoring access, reconciling, or returning to an unsafe relationship. You do not need to contact the person who harmed you, and you do not need an apology in order to choose a meaningful next step for yourself.

Boundaries may come before forgiveness—or may be the most appropriate goal. If harm is ongoing, safety and individualized support take priority over release exercises or relationship repair.
